1999 Mildura 100

EASTER ACTION AT MILDURA

This 'Mildura 100' was the 3rd and final round in The King of The Murray Series & it ended with phenomenal speeds and hazzardous action on the mirror calm waters of the beautiful Murray River. 100k's of racing saw Ian Tricker's twin outboard - Showdown reach 200km/hr (as recorded by a speed gun). The Sting was clocked at 198km/hr - incredible speeds & congrats to the teams including mechanics of these ultimate outfits.

Racing at Mildura started on Saturday with the social events and records were broken in the 175HP class by High Roller and in Social Women, by Mickey D. Saturday afternoon saw the Dash for Cash, which decided pole position for the event on Sunday The placings and times were:

Showdown 4:59.20 new record
Driver Ian Tricker Observer Steve Cotton Skiers Daniel Cotton, Dean Hankle

The Sting 4:59.74 new record
Driver Ken Broughton Observer Heath Broughton Skiers Daniel Auld, Scott Dominguez

The Axe 5:06.44 new record
Driver Kelvin Black Observer Darren Patterson Skiers Troy Penny, Michael Stevens

Mirage 5:07.88 new record
Driver Brad Gallard Observer Tim Whetstone Skiers Steve Rowe, Paul Robertson

God's Gift 5:15.27 Driver
Graham Ritchie Observer Stuart Thomas Skiers Jamie Oliver, Stephen Robertson

One of the major disappointments of the weekend was with the God's Gift team. After competing in the Dash for Cash on Saturday, the team decided to try out some propellers. During one of the practice runs, the propeller threw a blade and broke through the hull, causing the boat to barrel roll & sink to the bottom of the muddy Murray. Driver Graham Richie was thrown out at high speed and although escaping serious injury, he was kept in Mildura Base Hospital overnight for observation. The boat was pulled from the water on Saturday night. What was the once beautiful God's Gift, has now been described as having "major damage" & being, "a total wreck". With God's Gift out, the crowd had to go without one of their favourite entries on the Sunday.

Racing in sunny conditions on Sunday saw Superclass first on the water. Showdown started the race, but a houseboat on course, created a wash that caused one of the skiers to fall, and the team withdrew from the event. This meant that the King of the Murray will jackpot till next year, as Showdown was the only boat to finish in the top 5 places at Southern 80 & Robinvale.

The winner of the event was The Sting in a time of 32:26.88 with a new race record. Second in Superclass was The Axe with a time of 34:52.71 followed by Legless with a time of 38:23.41. Other records were broken including Cinders finally winning an event at Mildura in the 6 litre class.
