Unofficial results only - Outright -

1st Showdown
Daniel Cotton Scott Dominguez

2nd The Axe
Troy Penny
Michael Stevens

3rd The Pump
Mitch Galvin
Danny Cropper

1st Womens - Sitting Bullett - Lee Hicks & Julie Lord

A great race spoiled by atrocious conditions in the boat marshalling area, read - MUD and flies. American boat, More Money Honey 444, finished a trying race after multiple rope snaps,
due to turbo exhaust unknowingly burning a rope prior to the start. Many other classes hard fought, won & lost. 100 entries all together on the day, that's 200 skiers in great 38deg C
summer weather

Dassen Island Race - South Africa

Although the Mainstay International Dassen Island waterski race had to be postponed on Saturday 28 March due to severewinds and rough sea conditions, the prayers of competitors and officials were answered on Sunday when conditions wereperfect for an offshore ski race. All enjoyed their second hearty breakfast in two days at Oceana Power Boat Club's Granger Bay club house after which the final preparations forthe race were made and they went onto the water at 0900. Joining the 11 ski teams was the Class 3 offshore racing 1.3 litre class on their first adventure to Dassen Island and back. Once the helicopter was in position complete with film crew, the start boat dropped the flag and all the competitors got off to agood start. Less than five minutes after the off a flare was seen from the OPBC control tower. It was 1.3 litre competitors, Craig and Michael Lambert who struck flotsam in the course. In this instance it was a bit of building scaffold board floating around in the bay that did the damage. Visiting UK skiers, Alan Payne and Steven Bird were in the race. Payne, who won the Vaal River race a couple of weeks
before, skiing behind Craig Hoedemaker and Leon Herholdt in their less-than-young BarneyCraft kept up with initial leader Nico Vlok behind Robbie Heydenrych and Tommy Adlem and then took over the lead when Vlok fell to be the first to reach the Dassen Island marker boat. He was the first winner of the newly instituted Jerry Tanguy Floating Trophy for the first skier to reach the island. Second at the island was Ray Wilson behind Ray Faber's 'Wells Faber' and Wayne Munna while relocated Capie, now in Gauteng, Mark Moir was third behind Marlene Krause and Morne Herholdt in their Telstar 'Bad Company' sporting a pair of new Mercurys. Young Thys Louw was the first retirement when Joost van der Ploeg's Telstar, 'Nervous Tension' suffered mechanical problems and were forced to retire. Then Hoedemaker's boat started sinking and let off a distress flare and had to be taken in tow. This let Wilson into the lead with Moir second and J C de Reuck, behind Peter Edge's 'Mainstay International' and Sean Colli, moved into third where they stayed to the finish. Fourth was Jonathan Wayne behind brother Eugene and father John on 'Toyta' and Vlok finished fifth. Story of the race was young Lezanne Jacobs from Gauteng taking part in her first Dassen Island race behind Mark Jones and Tracey Roberts, took a break at the island to get her strength back. She finished in a half a minute under three hours. Bird, behind Rob "Rooster" Steenkamp and Erica Klose, hung in there to finish seventh in 2;49,45. His wife Cathy, editor of UK publication Waterski Racing News, said he hand't ever skied continuously before for more than an hour which makes his performance here even more meritorious. Ahead of him was Mike Moir behind Wayne Jacobs and Dave Eastman in 'Renegade'. Michael who races in the intermediate class achieved an excellent time of 2;20,58. Eighth was Myrtle Smit behidn Phil Ress and John Sparks whose 2;52,42 was an hour better than her previous best. Former world 1.3 litre champ Dean Grimmbacher and new navigator Breck Heeps, won the Teleboss prize for the first boat
home with Geoff and Peter Kelly second. A Junior Formula race was held at the same time which was won by 12-year-old Darryn Harrison. Thanks to Mainstay International who have sponsored this event for several years, Energade, Teleboss and Old Mutual World of Endurance, who supported the event with their film crew.

WAYNE HAS NO MAWER PLANS TO RACE IN NEAR FUTURE

23 year old World Champion Wayne Mawer has told me that he has no plans to race again in the near future. "At this stage", he said, "I have no interest in aiming to

BUILD UP FOR SOUTHERN 80

One of the best races in the world goes off this coming weekend. Around 80,000 spectators are expected to watch the 500 boats and 1000 ski racers hurtle down the
Murray River on Sunday at top speeds of over 110mph. Of course the event will take over the country town of Echuca for several days and the party will be as good as
ever. Speed Queen Jo Hamilton will be flying into her hometown especially for the big occasion. Buy the local Riverine Herald for all the news, with coverage by Suzi
'Yahoo' Hoghton, the Echucan journalist.

ROBBY PENNY GOES TO USA

World Junior Boys Champ Robby Penny from Queensland Australia is going to the USA to ski the Parker Marathons on March 14 & 15. Martie Well's will not be
ready to race by then due to his leg injury at the Worlds so he is going to drive his own boat "Wellscraft" and pull Robby. There's a chance that he might stay there the
whole year, with a break in between.
