THE FACES OF MATTHEW CRANE.
First there was the "I'm too cool for school"
look
as aquarist Matthew Crane took time out from his scuba duties shooting
underwater stills and video to take his turn in the MkV, as tenders
Vince Nolasco (above left) and Don Bouer dressed him topside.
Then there was the "whaddaya mean I'm too serious?" look (below left)
as Barry Olson did a final check of the dressing job.
Then came the traditional hero pose (below right).
BUT MATTHEW had one problem with the heavy gear -- he had trouble clearing his
ears without being able to reach his nose. The diver's universal fix was applied:
duct tape (above left)! The tenders and spectators were all encouraging Boyd
to tape the mouth instead of the nose, but the ear-clearing problem was
resolved in a practical if not necessarily graceful manner.
The end result was similar to that of the outlaw Tim Strawn characher
played by Lee Marvin in the movie "Cat Ballou."
Upon returning to the surface, Matthew removed the duct tape, which
had done its job, and posed for more dignified photos.
DAVE STURGESS of the Life Support Department
was the third diver for Thursday.
