A Brief History of Valley Chapter #16 R.A.M.

The Valley Chapter Royal Arch Masons, Middleton, Nova Scotia, received its charter on June 11, 1907.

The lodge rooms were located in a two-storey wooden frame building on the east side of Commercial Street, which also housed Ionic Lodge plus several other retail stores.

In January 1911, a great fire leveled much of the south and of Commercial Street, destroying all Lodge and Chapter furnishings, records and the Charter.

A new charter was granted to Valley Chapter R.A.M., Middleton, NS, in May of 1913, which is still in our possession and care.

From 1911 to 1914 there is no information available as to where or when meetings were held.

In 1915 Grand Chapter held its annual convention in Charlottetown, PEI. Seven companions from Valley Chapter attended and hotel rates ranged from $1.75 to $2.25 per night.

A receipt for $30.00 was found from Ionic Lodge for six months rent in the year 1916. In 1917 a letter was received from the Freemason's home in Windsor, NS where there were 22 guests at the time.

The Chapter had approximately 75 members in 1918, this number found on a bill for printing the notice. The December meeting of the same year must have been a special occasion, I can only find correspondence which hinted that many prayers were said thanking God for the end of the war.

The Chapter was still at the Masonic Hall an Commercial Street in 1919.

The by-laws were rewritten in 1921. A fire insurance policy was purchased that year on all furnishings and regalia at a cost of $9.92 for one year. Postage fees totaled $1.65 in 1921.

Very little correspondence is available for the years from 1924 to 1964.

On January 18, 1926, sixty companions were in attendance for our Installation ceremonies.

In April of 1933 it was moved by J. Phinney and seconded by P.E. Black that PHP W Eaton be authorized to collect any dues possible and be refunded 10% for all collected.

On October 23, 1941, eight companions traveled to Windsor, NS with the travelling TRIANGLE.

1966 was the year Valley Chapter R.A.M., Middleton, NS, celebrated its 50th anniversary with a dinner and a very large attendance.
