A SICKNESS UNTO TRUTH

On the island of Knights and knaves, as many readers know by now, knights make only true statements and knaves make only false ones, and each inhabitant is either a knight or a knave. At least, that is how things normally are on this island. But one day a strange epidemic knows as the Veritas plague struck about half the inhabitants and made them reverse their roles. Sick knights commenced to lie., whereas sick knaves told the truth. And so in general, when an inhabitant lied, there was no way of knowing whether he was a sick knight or a healthy knave; conversely, if a person told the truth, he could either have been a healthy knight or a sick knave.. I say in general there was no way to tell, but there were exceptions, as some of the following problems will reveal.

1. One day a native made a statement from which it followed that he must have been a sick knight. What statement could that have been?

2. What statement could be made only by a sick knave?

3. One day a native made a statement from which it could be deduced that he must have been sick, or a knight, or maybe both. What statement would work?

4. Suppose, instead, he had made a statement from which it could be deduced that he was either sick or a knight, but not both. What statement would work?

5. One day two inhabitants named Aaron and Bowaine made the following statements about each other.

Aaron: Bowaine is a knight.
Bowaine: Aaron is a knave.
Aaron: Bowaine is sick.
Bowaine: Aaron is healthy.
