On Monday, March 30th, Club Earth took it's first camping trip out to Big Basin, where fun was had by all.
On November 11th, 1996 Club Earth went to Half Moon Bay for a tide-pool trip. About twenty club members showed up at Chabot College on a holiday to go and learn all about a part of the grand beaches of California. We all carpooled, of course, and had a great time with our Club Advisor, Carol Dixon, who also happens to be an ecology teacher, who acted as our guide to the wonders of the ocean.
Unfortunately we also found an oil drenched feather which we suspect originated from an oil spill in the San Francisco Bay. This just goes to show how widely eco-systems and various species are affected by the neglect of a few individuals.
In other news, Club Earth wrote a petition to U.S. Senator, Dianne Feinstein, to ensure the safekeeping of our Headwaters forests in California. Over a hundred and twenty of Chabot's students and staff signed the petition and these are just a small percentage of the people we were able to reach out to.
Club Earth has begun putting together a committee for an extension to the already existing recycling programs of the different departments on campus. If your college has a recycling program and/or you have any information that may be useful for our purpose and would like to share the information, please feel free to e-mail us with your ideas, suggestions, etc. We will keep you posted with the development of our program so that anyone interested in starting a recycling program of their own would have some idea as to where to start.
Twice during the school year, the student
government puts on an event called Club Day. You might guess from
the title what it is about. Basically what happens is that all
the different clubs on campus get together and put on a
"get-to-know-your-clubs" function. A great way for new
and old clubs to gain new members and let them know about
ourselves. What Club Earth does during these times, in addition
to letting students know about our clubs, is to pass out various
informational pamphlets about different eco concerns. We pass out
recycling guides that are provided to us by Alameda Waste Management
Authority. We have info on local parks and other nature trips
that we are aware of. Sometimes we will have petitions to stop eco-terrorism around
the nation and around the world.
Johann and David check out the Club Earth Table while Randy and Rina explain our mission. | Tara and Rina take a moment to pose for the camera. |

On October 28th, 1997, we organized and executed a campus cleanup day. It went quite well. About 15 students showed up to help clean up Chabot College. Most of them were Club Earth and Able-Disable Club (a club for the handicapped) members. We passed out lots of free goodies to all participants and hopefully we will have a bigger, better one next semester.
Club Earth participated in Chabot's 2nd-chance garage sale on October 25th, 1997. The theme of the garage sale: Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle. Club members brought their unwanted stuff to sell and earned some extra cash for themselves. Some of their earnings they donated to the club.
