About ..... Lycaste:

The most easy way to learn a lot about Lycaste is to buy "Lycaste species The essential Guide" by Dr. Henry F.Oakeley from Beckenham, England. He is the holder of the National Collection of Lycastes in Great Britain. The Guide shows color-pictures of all Lycaste species, natural hybrids and the subspecies with brief-descriptions of the flowers.
On the second page is a splendid series of articles from the American Orchid Society Bulletin Volumes, of 1991. Almost all the volumes of that year give descriptions of Lycastes by Henry Oakeley, with a summary of the species and more details between the different species. It also gives a lot of references.

About ..... My first view on Lycaste:

In november 1993, I visited the orchid show in Lincoln, England, with Jack Wubben, nurserieholder in the Netherlands. He was there with several plants for trade and to show plants. After the show I took a short holiday in London. Jack arranged a ride to London for me, where I would visite the Botanical Gardens Kew and Wisley on my own. The driver was ...... Henry Oakeley. Near London Henry asked me to stay the night at his place, which I accepted. After arrival, he showed me his plants. This is where I saw my favorite Lycaste for the first time..... The Green Lycaste locusta with the white fimbriation (a picture of locusta is on my homepage). Inside the house we talked about orchids and as a present he gave me, The Guide, published a half year earlier. I use this guide, with the foreword of Henry, almost every day. He also gave me an invitation for the Botanical Gardens, where I was welcomed almost like a VIP.

About ..... Me (and my plants):

My name is Adrian van Andel, and I reside in Wijk bij Duurstede, a small town near Utrecht, in the middle of the Netherlands. My appartement is on the first and second floor, and my greenhouse is on the first floor. The size is approximately 4,5 meter by 2,5 meter, with heating, ventilation and a mistinstallation. It is a pity that I have only tapwater for watering my plants, rainwater should be much bether. Half of the greenhouse is occupied by about 150 Lycaste-species; the southside (where the heater is) is to warm for those plants, and therefore my plants from Madagascar are standing(or hanging) there, like Angraecum (my biggest plant is Angraecum eburneum subsp. superbum var. longicalcar, also named Angraecum superbum var. longicalcar; or, a lot easier, Angraecum longicalcar) with a width of 1,5 meter, by 1 meter high. This one flowers every year for 3 months, and has a flowerstalk of over a meter high, with over 15 big flowers. Aerangis, Aeranthes, Cyrtorchis, Jumellea and Sobennikoffia are the ones on the south side. Some other plants I have, are Anguloa, Brassia, Coelogyne, Oncidium, Stanhopea, and some Paphiopedilums. I only have a few hybrids.
I am still looking for some Lycaste-species like: cochleata, consobrina, crinita, jarae, lanipes, lata, maxibractea, mathiasae, some variaties of skinneri and suaveolens. But I continue to look also for the ones I allready have.
My occupation is a financial manager and I work for the veterans organisation in the Netherlands. Most of the times when Jack Wubben goes to England for shows, I go with him to give him a hand and to look over (= most of the time, to buy some more Lycaste-plants). I like the shows in England.
