OK, I'm a software engineer for a Sunnyvale-based voice applications
development company.
They would be the first to point out that they are in no way
affiliated with the contents of these pages.
I like to work at the Renaissance Faire in San Bernardino every
Spring. (One of these days I'll scan some pictures.) It's rough
working up there--you have to eat, drink, yell, and flirt all day. But I keep going back anyway.
Some of my best friends are from the Faire,
and I always miss them during the rest of the year.
Every 4th of July, I fly out to Michigan and help set off a couple of
municipal fireworks shows there. I and an old college buddy also play
with as many unsafe and insane fireworks as we can get our hands on.
Kids, don't try this at home!
I also rollerblade, play volleyball, fly stunt kites, spend way too much time on the
web and playing computer games, and used to be disguised as a Second
Trombone Player.
And I like to play with K'NeX construction sets! My
K'NeX page will expand as I find the time...
The Obligatory Music List
Music is a big influence in my life. Some groups will always be at
the top of my playlist:
- Pink Floyd
- My favorite rock song of all time is "Echos"--all 23 minutes of it! And this band puts on one Hell of a show in concert.
- David Bowie
- Tones on Tail
- Really my hands-down favorite band
- Ben Folds Five
- A band I never get tired of. Interesting chords, interesting ideas for the songs, great lyrics! I love "Boxing"!
- Kate Bush
- Stone Temple Pilots
- Heaven 17
- Nine Inch Nails
- If you can deal with the lyrics, Trent Reznor is a musical genius.
- DEVO
- Dead Kennedys
- Jello Biafra may not be a musical genious, but he has some great lyrics.
- The Boomtown Rats
- One of the most versatile, yet steadfastly overlooked bands of the 80's.
- Oingo Boingo
- Christina
- If you've heard of her, tell me. As far as I know, she only released two 12" EPs, but they contained two of my favorite songs of the 80's, "Things Fall Apart" and a cover of "Is That All There Is?"
- Gary Numan
- Sparks
- The Cardigans
- Wow! First Band on the Moon has great chords, great choruses, great music! I didn't like Life as well--it seemed to have more of the pop and less of the melancholy/nostalgic undertones that made FBotM so interesting.
- Fiona Apple
- Yikes! Another brilliant 19-year-old female vocalist. Where do they keep coming up with 'em? And why do their boyfriends keep leaving them?
Others come and go:
- Alanis Morissette
- Cocteau Twins
- Beastie Boys
- Erasure
- The best concert I have ever been to.
- The Cure
- The second-best concert I have ever been to.
- The Church
- Lousy in concert, great in the studio.
- Tori Amos
- Brand New Heavies
And some music doesn't do a thing for me:
- Both kinds of music (Country and Western)
- REM and their clones
- Reggae (except for "Jammin'")
- Rap, when it's hopelessly antisocial or self-involved, which is
most of the time.
Music Sites
(only the good ones...)
- The VOSA homepage. Information on the Voice of the San Diego Symphony Audience. The San Diego Symphony has been forced into Chapter 11 reorganization. It needs your help!
- The New Wave Outpost campaigns for the reissue of worthy but obscure New Wave and related music.
- Oglio Records has put out some excellent 80's compilations.
