Marineland sojourn

Page last updated on 8 November 1998
A lot of my work experience has been gained through voluntary work. I can thoroughly recommend doing that if you have the time and money. At eighteen I worked at New Zealand's only Marineland (in Napier). They were short staffed at the time so I was given feeding and some training responsibilities.

It was great to get up close to the dolphins, NZ fur seals, sea-leopards, various penguins, otters and Californian sealions. In hindsight I've realised that the conditions for the animals were less than ideal, but at the time it was paradise. My stint in Napier also included a week at the kiwi house, and another at the aquarium (including my first, and so far only, scuba-dive in the shark tank).

The final bow from three Common Dolphins (Delphinus delphis) during the show at Marineland in Napier.
