Overseas experience, where else?

Page last updated on 8 November 1998
Most New Zealanders (Kiwi's) try to make it overseas at some point in their lives. Overseas is a truism because New Zealand is surrounded by large oceans. This type of travel is known as the big O.E. (Overseas Experience).

I travelled around Europe with an organised tour for 4 weeks and then spend the rest of the year flitting between working in England and visiting relatives in Nederland.

Attending "Wildscreen 86", a festival to award the best natural history documentaries, was my most memorable week. It was great watching the newly made documentaries while hobnobbing with the film makers and directors.
Meeting wild tortoises, interesting bugs and seeing how polluted Europe was are my most prominant ecological memories.

Three and four story houses in Dubrovnik stacked like so many toy building blocks

The ancient fortified wall completely surrounds the city of Dubrovnik

I tried all the types of icecream and chocolate while in Europe, and New Zealand varieties compare favourably.

My favourite places were Venezia (Venice) and Rome in Italie, Castle Neuschwanstein in Austria and Dubrovnik in Yugoslavia.

Dubrovnik is an ancient walled city. Since my visit it has been severely damaged by the fighting after the Russian communist block broke up. Here are some of the pictures of what it looked like when I was there.
