My cousin Ilse, holding one of the large bouquets of tulips that we absconded with. | Holland is renowned for it's tulips, and when I visited there in 1986 I also went to the Keukenhof. At the Keukenhof they grow millions of tulips in wide flowerbeds. This is a spectacularly beautiful sight, a patchwork mosaic of colours, each patch is a massing of one colour. Unfortunately, we stopped by at the end of May, which is also the end of the season at the Keukenhof. The gardeners were cutting off all the flowers, prior to digging the bulbs up for storage. There were barrows and barrows of tulips standing in the aisles between the denuded beds. I asked one of the gardeners what they did with the tulips and was told they would be thrown out. We got permission to abscond with as many tulips as we could carry and decorated my aunts' home with tulip laden vases on every flat surface. |
