THE CORNCRAKE

SURVIVING ON A WING AND A PRAYER

BY NED MURTAGH

Conservation groups throughout Europe have made a concerted attempt to lobby public opinion, by issuing pamphlets periodically, informing the public at large, and also advising Local Governments on how best to ensure the survival of Crex Crex into the 21st Century.

Prominent Newspapers and Periodicals throughout Europe have also taken up the torch. Ireland's leading newspaper - The Irish Times - has recently featured excellent articles on the plight of the corncrake by Nuala O'Faolain and Patsy McGarry, two of its most experienced and capable writers and an explanatory treatise of the conservation effort by Ms. Catherine Casey of the Corncrake Grant Scheme. However in Nature Conservation parlance:

VICTORIES ARE ONLY TEMPORARY - DEFEAT MEANS
