"Under The Sea"
The manatee has
been known to be called the Sea Cow, Big Beaver and even a
mermaid.
The Florida State Marine Mammal size can be 8'-14' long and is gray
in color. Manatee are a docile slow-moving mammal with flippers that
appear almost hand-like from a distance which has fostered the
legend that manatees were thought to be "mermaids".
They are a
waterplant-eating
gentle giant.
To a manatee a speeding boat is
more hazardous then disease, weather, alligators or poachers.
Many manatees are killed every year by power boat propellers
and collisions. The docile slow moving
manatees have difficulty avoiding speeding boats.
The manatee is on the
endangered species list.
Of all the known causes of manatee mortality, man himself is
responsible for half the deaths of these gentle beasts.
The single greatest known cause of their deaths are man
operating boats and barges.
A single boats propeller blades can slice open a manatee's
thick hide leaving it wounded for bleeding to death, disease
or to be brutally attacked by hungry alligators.
Man the operator of these boats can not see these
docile mammals when speeding on the waterways and the manatee
can not move out of the way fast enough to save themselves
from being ripped to shreds.
