So what do I do?
Well, a few things actually:
- PhD Candidate, School of Politics and International Studies, University of Leeds. I have been working on my thesis since 1997, and it will be submitted at the beginning of February, 2001. It undertakes a critical examination of environmentalism, using the communicative theories of Jurgen Habermas, and social movement theories. This is then applied to the study of direct action groups such as Earth First!, and a more mainstream environmental organisation in the shape of Friends of the Earth UK.
I have published two papers from this work already:
Whitworth, A. (2000): "Communicating with the Environment? Nonhuman Nature in the Theories of Jurgen Habermas", Politics, 20/3
Whitworth, A. (2001): "Ethics and Reality in Environmental Discourses", Environmental Politics, forthcoming in 2001.
- ACOM programme, University of Leeds. I also teach on the ACOM programme at Leeds, offering IT Skills to students from all other disciplines. The particular options I teach are: Wordprocessing Techniques, HTML and Web Design, Advanced Data Handling and Interactive Web Pages.
- Computing Applications in Public Administration, Manchester Metropolitan University . I also teach IT Skills at MMU to second year Public Policy and Admin students, along rather similar lines to the ACOM modules.

And a couple for the security services of both the US and UK: me (and Doug/King Queen) relaxing at, or rather on, the main gate of Menwith Hill US Spy Base: home of Echelon, that lovely happy bunny service that isn't really monitoring all our e-mails and selling commercial information about European companies to the Americans in violation of about seventeen treaties and laws - oh no.
