Most lookouts in Oregon are open for visits by the public. A few, although owned
and operated by State or Federal Agencies, are surrounded
by private property and behind many miles of locked gates. Most others
you can drive or walk to. Most lookouts even permit visitors
in the cab; Those that don't will post a sign indicating so.
Sadly it is gradually becoming more and more common
for lookouts to be locked behind gates and the towers closed
to public visitation as vandalism and
harassment is becoming all too common in some areas. If you plan on visiting
a lookout keep in mind the following: 1)Lookout staffers are a diverse group to say the least. Many love human company while others prefer coyotes and sunsets for companions. Visitors are almost always warmly welcomed but remember that the cab is not only the lookout staffer's work place, but also their summer home. Be respectful and you will be respected! ALSO: As a general rule, visitors are not allowed in the cabs before sunrise or after sunset. The best times to visit are usually during the normal 9 to 6 working hours. 2)Most lookouts do not have drinking water available to the public 3)Most have outhouses that the public may use but this is not always the case as some are closed( because people often tend to throw popcans and other non-biodegradables in the toilet) 4)A handful of lookouts in Oregon require a short(usually one to two mile)hike to access. The vast majority can be driven to. A 4WD is often a plus and sometimes a necessity! |
