How did you find us?: Straw bale surfing | Comments: We are building a 30 X 45 ft "experimental building". So far, we have used a rubble footing, similar to your rocks, and a permanent wood foundation with 2" foam insulation. To support the second story, the first floor walls were built with verticle trusse between every two columns of straw bales. This level will be a 2 & 1/2 car garage, and 2-3 workshops. The second level, master bedroom, library, & baths will be bales stacked brick-style. We have used windows gleaned from demolition projects and garage s les in our attempt to keep the overall cost to $10/sq ft. "Places of the Soul" was an inspiration for me but did nothing for my husband, an engineer. The building is proving to be a remarkable blend of ideas from both of us, tho. Hope to see your project ometime in the year 2000. Best of luck. P.S. How did you ever get an earthen floor past the builing dept.??!? I've loved the idea of an earthen floor since reading "The $50.00 and Under Underground House" book. Liked your diary idea, too. |

The Caddo Indians dominated most of East Texas and western Louisiana from 800 to 1800. Their houses, made of poles placed in the ground, looked like bee hives. The indians thatched the roofs with local grasses. |
