I am an artist that enjoys building and renovating homes. stawbale consturction is just new to me and I have been doing a lot of reserach in using this type of construction in Michigan, but found very little info till your site. My husband and I are al ays looking for more creative ways to build beautiful and fucntional structures. Not just boxes! We would really enjoy talking to you about meeting the building codes? Did you have any trouble? Great stuff hope to hear from you soon, Sincerely, Karla Price We live in Clarkston 248-394-0374

We are building a 30 X 45 ft "experimental building". So far, we have used a rubble footing, similar to your rocks, and a permanent wood foundation with 2" foam insulation. To support the second story, the first floor walls were built with verticle trusse between every two columns of straw bales. This level will be a 2 & 1/2 car garage, and 2-3 workshops. The second level, master bedroom, library, & baths will be bales stacked brick-style. We have used windows gleaned from demolition projects and garage s les in our attempt to keep the overall cost to $10/sq ft. "Places of the Soul" was an inspiration for me but did nothing for my husband, an engineer. The building is proving to be a remarkable blend of ideas from both of us, tho. Hope to see your project ometime in the year 2000. Best of luck. P.S. How did you ever get an earthen floor past the builing dept.??!? I've loved the idea of an earthen floor since reading "The $50.00 and Under Underground House" book. Liked your diary idea, too.

I am researching thatching for a project at A & M - Commerce on Caddo Indian houses. The Caddo Indians dominated most of East Texas and western Louisiana from 800 to 1800. Their houses, made of poles placed in the ground, looked like bee hives. The indians thatched the roofs with local grasses.

I am interested in finding the the book "Place for the Soul". Our city library doesn't have it and I can't seem to find it in the major book stores. Got any ideas? I hope my husband I will be able to build a small home and studio similar to yours during the next 10 years. May even be able to start the studio this coming summer if things work out. Great job! Very soft and pleasing sight rather than a fast and impersonal touch of most sights. Love the butterflies and sun motifs. Definetely an artists touch. Very encouraged by the look of the field stone foundation and the thatch. I'll will now do some research inthat area. I have always liked the style. Best wishes and hope to get my home and artists studio/workshop on the go soon.
