HP48GX

This is the HP48GX specifications page for those of you deciding to buy one. The HP48 is a high end programmable calculator, and in my opinion (and not to mention a great number of other people), the best programmable calculator.

It has come a long way, from its introduction in 1990. It started with a 32KB RAM, and a 256KB ROM. Now, it has 128KB (up to 1280KB when expanded internally), and a 512KB ROM.

It originally ran at 2MHz (HP48S/SX), but is now clocked at 4MHz (HP48G/GX). Unfortuenatly, it is hardwired to that clock speed, and cannot be overclocked.

It only has a small 4-BIT (nibble-wide, half a byte) data bus, so some operations are slow. This does not infer that everything runs slow, because most of the programs on it (even User-RPL) run fast.

As some of the more experienced HP48 users have discovered (as well as others tinkering around with it), you can make your own perhiperals and wire them into the HP48's internal bus using the expansion slot. This is what the wireless modem of GS/5 is based upon.
