Computer and Internet Literacy: Core Competency Level 2

Level 1    Level 2    Level 3

This is the next higher level of computer literacy, demonstrating the ability to use more technology applications and Internet tools.

  • Know how to prepare an electronic presentation. Electronic presentations can be easily developed using, for example, Microsoft PowerPoint. All faculty should be able to design an electronic presentation to support classroom lectures and discussions.

  • Know how to use a spreadsheet. Using spreadsheets to maintain student grades, calculate scores, and eliminate errors is a high priority.

  • Understand the effective use of a Home Page or Web site. Faculty who support their face-to-face and distance education courses with a Home Page are able to maintain and distribute course materials instantly. They offer students a method of communication twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

  • Know how to use ftp to download files and/or upload home pages to a Web server.

  • Know how to use Usenet. Sharing ideas in one’s discipline with peers is challenging and a learning experience.

Explore the different core levels and compare individual skills and abilities to those of other professionals. For more information on computer literacy, visit the UMUC Center for Teaching, Learning and Assessment or contact the TRAC Office.
