IFSM 498F: IT Infrastructure in E-Commerce
Project Requirements

Syllabus

Project: 25% = 100 points total

One of the objectives of the course is to: Construct a Web site "model" that demonstrates a student's knowledge and understanding of e-commerce infrastructure, project planning, competitive strategy, and marketing.

To meet this objective, each of you will design and build a Web site. Two to three pages in your Web site should describe the IT infrastructure and business elements of your e-commerce site.

Specifically, these pages should include a) the mission statement, b) the objectives of your site, c) your target markets, and d) a brief strategy for implementing the Web site. The key point is to communicate to your audience - on your Web site - the purpose, target market, and infrastructure of your Web business.

Although it will be difficult to actually open a fully functioning e-commerce Web site, I still want you to prepare the Web site as if you were starting an e-business. The fictitious business may offer services, information, or products. To properly include the two to three pages of business strategy, a suggested outline/template will be available to you.

Your Web site should be hosted by one of the e-commerce Web hosting companies that offer free hosting services. There are several of these e-commerce services; e.g., http://www.hypermart.com. A more comprehensive list will be distributed to you in one of the Conference areas, however, last term we discovered that - at this time - Hypermart or Geocities is the best for everyone to use if you know how to write HTML or use a Web design application such as Microsoft FrontPage. If you do not know either, then, I recommend that you use Yahoo!Store for your site. All of these services offer free design, statistical reports, and so forth. Although I encourage students to use these services, because in real e-business development one would, I do not want students to spend money to do it. Several Web activities during the term will support building the Web at a free hosting service; therefore, those students with little or no experience building a Web site will not be at a disadvantage. A student will, however, have to choose and determine the preferences and other elements that support his/her e-commerce enterprise objectives. The purpose of this part of the project is to develop the creative thinking processes that are required to design and implement an e-commerce proposal and an online environment. Remember, most e-commerce enterprises let the professional hosting companies build the online environment after the preferences have been determined.

Additional Information
You may work in groups of no more than three students or you may complete the project individually. The project may be on almost any type of e-commerce enterprise; however, it must first have my approval.

Do not wait until the last minute to begin planning. If you have questions, please ask. For more professional direction, and to eliminate misunderstanding about how it will be graded, see the Project Evaluation Criteria (to be posted about Week 4).
