Safe Mode

Windows has a built in troubleshooting mode they call 'Safe Mode'. It enables you to start Windows with a limited number of drivers. If Windows detects a problem on startup, it will start in this mode. Safe mode uses VGA resolution at only 16 colors, so don't be surprised by how ugly it looks!

Safe mode permits access to the control panel and system settings in the event Windows cannot initialize properly. You can check system settings in the control panel, then shutdown and reboot to hopefully start Windows in normal mode.

You can force Windows into safe mode at bootup by: Pressing 'F8' when you see 'Starting Windows 9...'. A start menu will appear offering startup choices. Select safe mode (#3) on most systems. By selecting either 'prompt' mode, you can bypass Windows, and go to a DOS prompt. These modes may allow non-Windows programs to run, when they wouldn't run in a DOS window inside Windows.

When you are installing a new video card, or are trying new video modes, which your hardware or Windows cannot handle, it's very possible for Safe Mode to be called until the correct drivers or settings are established in the Control Panel.
