Excellent Electronic Mailing Lists

Note Re: Mailing Lists: Mailing lists differ from newsgroups in the way the messages are delivered and thus their software protocol. The difference is essentially that in newsgroups all messages posted to the discussion/news group are placed on the news server and one must both have access to it (usually bought through an ISP) whereas mailing lists instead will e-mail the posts to you directly. These posts can be sent in 4 ways depending on whether they are moderated or not and if they are condensed or not. The moderated digests have a moderator choose which posts are most relevant and collects them into a single e-mail which is then sent to all on the mailing list or allowed to be sent as separate posts. The unmoderated lists are usually automated so that anything that is posted is e-mailed to all on the list. Some unmoderated lists will also have a digest version available.

The Extropy Institute has several mailing lists that you can easily join at this site. The Extropy Institute site has a general unmoderated list and several regional lists and a moderated Extropian Digest list as well.

A Transhumanist mailing list can be subscribed to here which is the List's home page and its discussion archives.
A newer Transhuman Technology mailing is available. It is to discuss finer scientific or technological points in developing knowledge and techniques that have Transhumanist applications or goals. The list is an excellent source of this more technical information and is now where most of the scientific conferences and similar articles and links are posted to. To subscribe, send mail to listserv@excelsior.org with the command "subscribe transhumantech Your Name" in the body (not the subject) of the message. (To unsubscribe do the same thing but write unsubscribe instead.)

A recent list that has called itself the "Insane Science Mailing List" or ISML has started and can be subscribed to at its home page easily where its archives is located also. This list does seem to focus on latest developments in biotechnology relating to cloning, gene therapy, etc.

A mailing list from the Mind Uploading Research Group (MURG) can be subscribed to at their home page. More about "mind uploading" is available here.

The CryoNet Mailing List can be joined by sending e-mail to cryonet-request@cryonet.org with "subscribe" in the subject line of the message and the body of the e-mail left blank.

The Cryopreservation Mailing List is "meant for discussion of matters cryobiological, primarily information about cryoprotectant action of interest to mammal organ cryopreservation for transplantation purposes. Specifically, this list attempts to create a haven for learned low-noise discourse among professionals in the field of cryobiology" It is therefore a technical list closely related to the goals of cryonicists that participate in the more sociological CryoNet list above. To subscribe one send the request "subscribe cryopreservation" in the body of the text only message to majordomo@excelsior.org. A confirmation code then is e-mailed to you which must be replied to (this time the sender was listserv@planetx.com). When this is processed automatically you are sent a welcome message.

Another mailing list called Mind-I is described as "an unmoderated mailing list hosted by the AquaThought Foundation focusing on neurotechnology and related subjects. Primary topics include: mind machines (also known as light and sound or L/S machines), cranial electrical stimulation (CES), biofeedback, nootropics (smart nutrients), and floatation (sensory deprivation). Some related topics are EEG analysis, hypnosis, relaxation, peak mind performance, and ultrasonic hearing (Neurophones). Discussions are usually freewheeling and varied, representing views of neurotech users (both novice and experienced), researchers, and commercial vendors. Traffic volume ranges from about ten to fifteen messages a day to as little as two or three in a week. More information about the list is available at their home page.
Zyvex has formed a mailing list called Inform for those interested in nanotechnology. The list's home page can answer other questions about the list. Zyvex is a private company which plans to build Drexlerian assemblers.
The Time-Space Mailing List is "a serious discussion group for topics involving time, space, quantum physics, indeterminacy, relativity, four dimensional geometry, and all other relevant areas in context of the development of technologies that could one day facilitate space travel (without passing through the intervening space); inter-dimensional travel in more than three dimensions (to other time-space systems) and even time-travel." Their home page gives more detailed subscription information.
