"Anime" is Japanese for "animation" or "cartoons." Thus in the U.S., anime = Japanese animation. Many popular cartoons in the U.S. are anime: Robotech, Dragonball Z, Pokemon--but not Transformers. I used to watch Robotech as a kid, but I really got hooked on anime in high school: my friend Michael Lee was watching the Macross (Robotech): Do You Remember Love? movie. Macross: DYRL was made way back in 1984 but is still one of my favorites. Part of my fondness for Macross may be nostalgia, but I also think the movie exhibits exceptional quality, both technically and aesthetically. In fact, the Macross movie reminds me of how I should work as a scientist, because quality stands the test of time.
