Aviation Skills
During my RAF service, I worked on the following equipment:
Bombsights; Drift Recorders; Ground Position Indicators; Air Position Indicators; Gyro-Magnetic compasses (Sperry Mks.GM2, GM4 and GM7); Magnetic Compasses (E2A, P10, P11); Automatic Dead Reckoning systems; Sperry Mk.10 Autopilots.
Tasks undertaken: Testing and calibration of the above equipment using Bay Servicing Schedules and repair of all the above equipment to component level in a Bay Servicing situation; Compass Swinging; Air tests of the navigational equipment, flying as supernumery aircrew (Navigator trainee) with Shackleton Mk3 Phase 3 aircraft of 120 Squadron (RAF Kinloss) and on Dominie Mk.1 (HS-125) and Avro Anson navigator training aircraft of the No.1 School of Air Navigation, RAF Stradishall.
During my service with the Royal Saudi Air Force, Dhahran (on contract to Field Aircraft Services, on behalf of Airwork Services Limited & B.A.C):
Commissioning Engineer and staff training, on the navigational equipment and Flight Management System on the Lightning Mks.53/55; I.F.I.C.S (Integrated Flight Instrument and Control System). Establishment of the Avionics Servicing Centre at Dhahran. Teaching Saudi students in the operation of test equipment and maintenance at Bay Servicing level of the above equipment.
Midland Aircraft Maintenance, Halfpenny Green Aerodrome, U.K.
Contract maintenance of primary flight instruments (Mk.20A Altimeter, Airspeed Indicator, Directional Gyro, Turn & Slip Indicator, Rate of Climb & Descent Indicator, Artificial Horizon) and airborne navigational equipment for a fleet of 75 light aircraft, comprising amongst others: PA-38 (Tomahawk), D.H.Chipmunk, Tiger Moth, Cessna 152, Citation, Scottish Aviation Bulldog.
Compass swinging, repair, maintenance, calibration and air testing of all the above equipment and systems.
