Emergance and Evolutionary Philosophy Home page
INTRODUCTION
Firstly a disclaimer. I havn't the time to read everything and I can't always remember
where I learned it, so If I have used ways of expressing things that have been used by
other people for other purposes or forget to cite my source information please forgive me.
Remember Humpty dumpty from Alice by Lewis Carroll who said "when I use a word it means
precisely what I want it to mean no less and no more". I am however happy to receive
questions, corrections and sources to extend anything that I have written here.
Convergent evolution is something that is clearly demonstrated throughout the world and I do not
believe that anything I may say is truly original and confidently expect to find a great number
of people have had similar ideas before. The great advantage of the Internet is that it increases
greatly the chance that these people may communicate and possibly refine and publicise these ideas
sufficiently to have a beneficial effect on the world. Conversely by my experience of exploring
these forests if these ideas are just another crank crying in a corner they will deserve their
place in silence but hopefully I will have done myself some good by getting them off my chest!
The format of this work
I have been writing short notes on topics skirting around the area of science and religion for
many years and some of them have been published in a small way and received some interest.
I had thought of the posibility of writing a book but am reasonably sure that it would go
the way of several diaries I have started and kept for a few days. The arrival of hypertext
and the internet has allowed me the possibility of publishing a book as I write it and at
the same time allowing multi dimensional order to emerge from a whole heap of topics. So my
aim is to write many essays on a range of subjects and link them together.
Outsiders and Insiders
Standing as I do at the extreme edge of organised religion I am well aware of the comunications
barrier that exists between those on the inside of any particular religious group and those on
the outside in fact just by mentioning the term religion this far up front I have probably
excluded a significant proportion of my potential audience. Can I redress the balance for the
moment (at the risk of offending another group) by saying that many religous insiders would
probably consider me to be an atheist. In an attempt to avoid these problems I have decided
to split the path through these writings between what I call outsiders who consider themselves
outside of conventional religious faiths or find such things an anathema and Insiders those who
do feel that religion (in particular the christian religion where my roots lie) has a part to play
in this process. If like me you see the merits of both approaches you are welcome to follow both
routes although I do expect them to have some common ground.
