The 60's and the Vietnam War
1960-1963

1969

1960

While the football team went 4-4, the season was remembered for a  30-8 victory over Episcopal.

Class of '60 honors Mr. Buckley both as a teacher of social studies and as a coach of championship wrestling, for his teams had won nine consecutive Inter-Ac championships by this time.

1961
Class of '61 honors Mr. George Black, registrar and assistant to the headmaster, who was celebrating 35 years of service to the school.

Squash team wins the Inter-Ac title with captain Nicky McIver undefeated all season.

Soccer team goes 9-1-2 to win the Inter-Ac title.

1962
Class of '62 honored Mr. Donald Brownlow, who taught courses in American History and international relations. Mr. Brownlow had earned his Masters degree from the University of Pennsylvania and had also did graduate work at the University of Zurich before coming to Haverford in 1951.

1963
Class of '63 dedicates the class book to Mr. Kenneth Kingham, who was the Dean of Students. "He was always willing to listen to anyone, prompt in giving an appropriate reply."
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

 

1964
The construction of a new $420, 000 wing for Ryan Memorial Gymnasium began. The new gym, which contained a basketball court, gymnastics room, weight-lifting room, locker and toilets, was completed in March 1965.

1965
While the final touches were being put on the new gym, the construction of an entire wing of Wilson Hall was started.This addition was made possible through a gift from the Henry Luce Foundation for $75, 000.

Headmaster Leslie R. Severinghaus retired in 1965 after thirty-six years of dedicated service to the school. The Class of '65 dedicated the school yearbook to Dr. Severinghaus.

Haverford graduate Pete Conrad, Class of 1948 sets record of eight days circling the earth as pilot of the Gemini 5 mission.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

 

1966

The addition to Wilson Hall was completed and dedicated in June 1966. It contained the library and also added to the top floor adjacent to the biology laboratory.

The year after Severinghaus had retired, Kenneth E. Kingham, then the Dean of Students, and assistant headmaster, took on the responsibility of interim headmaster.


Davis R. Parker

The Board of Directors appointed Davis R. Parker, a graduate of Princeton who had previously be headmaster in Milwaukee for five years, the new headmaster.

Mr. Parker was the first headmaster who was born in the 20th century.

1967
Class of '67 dedicates their yearbook to Dr. Deane H. Webber, who left Haverford after 23 years as head of the Lower School.

1968
An appreciation is given to Mrs. Cecil B. Jarvis, who was known as "the first lady" of the Haverford School. Secretary to the headmaster, Mrs. Jarvis came to the school as a French teacher in 1927.

1969
Haverford alumnus Pete Conrad, Class of 1948, commands Apollo 12 mission to the moon and becomes the third man to walk on the lunar surface.

Curriculum

The curriculum of the school greatly changed under Mr. Parker, with the English and Science departments offering various electives for V and VI Forms. The language, mathematics, and history departments basically stayed the same. The curriculum was as follows:

Languages: Spanish, French, Latin, and German.

Mathematics: General Math (Alegebra, Trigonometry, Geometry), and Calculus.

Histories: Ancient History, Modern European History, and International Relations.

English: Courses range from poetry to short stories and novels.
