The 1990's into the New Millennium

1990 - 1992
1993 - 1997
1998-1999
2000-2001
The early 90's was a relatively quiet period with regard to changes in administration, and construction projects. This segment of the timeline is dedicated to general interest items.

1990
Haverford chemistry students win the competition in the National Science Olympiad under teacher Mr. Ronald Brown.

participates in
3rd grade play.


Mr. Wright

Jay Wright, Class of '96 in Form II (8th grade). Mr. Wright went on to graduate from Trinity College and currently teaches physical education at Haverford.

1992
Neil Buckley gets his 600th wrestling victory.




















































 

1993
The Board of Directors appoints Dr. Joseph P. Healey, headmaster.

1993-1998
Under the leadership of Dr. Healey, the school launched a program called "On behalf of boys", which offered insights into the best way to teach boys and confirmed many of the virtues of single sex education.

Neil Buckley finishes his wrestling career with a national record 646 victories. 

1995


Mr. Holley

The school announces the selection of Mr. Timothy Holley as Director of Athletics. Mr. Holley is the first African American named to an administrative post in the school's 111 year history.

The school purchases homes on Panmure Road and Railroad Avenue. While the plan was to extend the campus beyond Panmure Road, the township zoning board did not approve the plan, and the residences are used to this day for staff from out-of-state.

1996
Varsity and J.V soccer teams go undefeated and win Inter-Ac titles.

1997
All school classrooms and office are wired for high speed T1 access to the Internet. All teachers are given laptop computers.

Palmer House is renovated and used as the the headquarters for Alumni and Development.

1998
Campus renovation projects continue. The remodeling of the lower level of Severinghaus Library includes an auditorium, four classrooms, and an office.

1999
The Board of Trustees appoints Dr. Joseph P. Cox, headmaster.

8th Headmaster
1998-Present

Dr. Cox came to Haverford from the West Point Military Academy in New York, and immediately began to emphasize core values. He has touched virtually everyone at Haverford by shaking their hand and giving them a coin that symbolizes integrity, respect, and friendship.

Maintenance building is demolished and rebuilt anew where the lower tennis courts used to be. This was done in order to make room for additional parking, as well as clean offices and public rest rooms.

Attractive new sidewalks and parking lots are constructed  and traffic pattern into campus from College Lane is redesigned.

Business office is relocated to a new location between the dining hall and Lower School.

Dr. Cox and Haverford family cut the ribbon on the newly renovated dining hall.

Demolition of the Ryan Memorial Gymnasium and Parker Gymnasium begins in preparation for the construction of what will be the finest athletic facility on the Main Line.



































 

2000
Gymnasium construction continues throughout the year.


Mr. Rufo talks to Lower School boys about the gym construction.

Lower School students use a digital camera to document the progress of the gym construction on new Lower School website.

In late November, the new Gymnasium, which includes basketball, wrestling, squash, fitness, swimming, trainer, and locker facilities, as well as offices, bleachers and concession area is open.


2004
Board approves plans to demolish Van Pelt Hall and build a new $12 million dollar Lower School. The project has been spearheaded by Lower School Head Mr. Richard J. Baroody.
