About the EIN

Welcome to our new EIN page. If you're wondering whether you need an EIN or how to apply, you'll find all the information you need right here.

First time applicants

If this is the first time you're applying for an EIN, you're in the right place. Before you fill out an application, check out Do I really need an EIN? We'll ask you some questions to help us determine whether you actually need a number. Depending on your responses, you may not need to apply. This is a simple needs test that we have used to demonstrate an online process. If you need more information, we have provided a copy of the SS-4 instructions for your review.

If you need a number

If you do need to get an EIN, the quickest and easiest way to apply for one would be online. We are currently working on prototypes to demonstrate this capability. Please check this site periodically to see our progress.

Current ways to apply to apply for an EIN

Application by Tele-Tin

Application by mail

How long will it take to get a number?

You'll want to apply for an EIN early enough to have your number when you need to file a return or make a deposit. If you apply electronically, you can get an EIN immediately. If you apply by mail, file Form SS-4 at least 4 to 5 weeks before you need your EIN to file a return or make a deposit.

What if I already have a number?

If you already have an EIN, you'll need to get a new one if either the organization or ownership of your business changes. For example, if you incorporate a sole proprietorship or form a partnership, you must get a new EIN. However, it isn't necessary to apply for a new EIN if you change only the name of your business.

When should I apply for a New EIN?

In addition to the criteria listed on the SS-4, there are some other guidelines you may need to consider:

If you become the new owner of an existing business, don't use the EIN of the former owner. Instead, If you already have an EIN, use that number. If you don't have an EIN, you'll need to apply for a number.

File only one SS-4, regardless of the number of businesses operated or trade names under which a business operates. However, each corporation in an affiliated group must file a separate application.

I've applied for an EIN but haven't received it

If you have a return due

If you don't have your EIN by the time a return is due, write "Applied for" and the date you applied in the space shown for the number. DON'T use your social security number.

If you have a deposit due

If you don't have your EIN by the time a deposit is due, send your payment to the service center address for your state. Make your check or money order payable to Internal Revenue Service and show your name (as shown on the SS-4), address, kind of tax, period covered, and the date you applied for your EIN.
