MEET DOROTHY BAUER! In early August, I had the great pleasure of meeting with Dorothy Bauer, owner and designer of "A Piece of the Rainbow" and Dorothy Bauer Designs at the Accessorie Circuit Show. This show used to be held at the Plaza Hotel, but for the past few years has been at Pier 92 and Pier 94 in New York City. It was such a pleasure seeing Dorothy again. She has the energy and imagination of a teenager, which reflects in her jewelry while the sophistication of the woman, takes command in the Designs by Dorothy Bauer. I wanted to sit down with her and interview her for our readers since I obtained one of her gorgeous 3 dimensional flower bouquet pins. Being a collector, I loved the idea that this pin was a limited edition and said so on the back. At the Accessorie Circuit Show, I found it difficult to sit down with her since her booth was busy with prospective buyers ? but Dorothy was gracious and answered them questions that most collectors want to know. Here are her answers: 1. When did you start "A Piece of the Rainbow?" I began A Piece of the Rainbow in 1981. 2. How did you come up with this idea? I started making jewelry strictly as a commercial venture to finance my art studio, after receiving my MFA from California College of Arts & Crafts in Oakland, California. 3. What is your background? I got my Masters in glass bowling with an emphasis in sculpture and a minor in printmaking. My BA was from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. I have two degrees: one in ceramics and one in independent studies (I set up a glass blowing studio for my final project). I have basically studied art my entire life (painting lessons started at age five. My first canvas is a snow scene done at Lake Michigan. I never took a jewelry class!!! Color and form have always been at the root of my explorations! Instructors often told me I was just a frustrated painter at heart, but honestly, 3E is the format Imost enjoy!
