Ext. desert environment. Camera slowly descends from focusing on the early-morning rising sun in the distance, and slowly focuses on a speeding poor-conditioned, convertible in the distance. As the car drives towards the camera, the engine and the music increase in volume. Credits appear on screen. Zoom to John Cusack look-a-like, Archie Venuti, driving car. Credits continue to roll. Change camera to his ID resting on the passenger seat – introducing audience to the main character. Music continues, Archie looks severely disappointed, and begins to loosen the knot of his tie further and unbuttoning the top of his shirt. Archie turns to his ID, picks it up and momentarily studies it and sighs, before throwing it out of his car. In the distance Archie can make out his destination – the bridge. As he approaches the bridge, the song ends and a new bulletin can be heard quietly. Archie turns down the volume on the radio. He slows down and pulls his car over, the radio stops. Archie gets out of the car, and takes his jacket off, and throws it in the back. Making his way to the centre of the bridge, he sighs and suddenly becomes very serious. As he gets closer to the centre, sepia images of the past week flash on-screen. No words can be heard, only movement. Archie’s mood further diminishes as he recalls the events of the last week. The fights with his girlfriend. His problems with his boss and co-employees that won’t leave him be. His loss in the family. He approaches the bridge barrier, over looking a valley. It’s a long drop, and perfect for what he has in mind. Archie begins to climb over the barrier, and the sepia images continue to flash on-screen. He almost slips and grabs hold of the barrier even tighter, and looks down. Camera changes to what Archie sees, and the view down begins to blur. Camera moves to Archie’s left as he positions himself for his jump. The camera focuses on his grip, and his hands suddenly release their tight hold on the barrier. Archie begins to fall, but in slow motion. As he falls, faint images, almost ghost-like, of angels and demons begins to appear around him. They are calling him, reaching out to him. They begin to whisper his name. Archie suddenly speeds up, and more of his life, from his teenage years begins to flash before his eyes. The images from his desperate life are presented in reverse chronological order. A sense of pity is conveyed to the audience. Images flash onscreen, slightly faded, but still comprehensible. As they get closer to his birth, the images speed up. His teenaged years are chaotic, his adolescence lonely. Shows him being born. To complete black. Archie: “Oh God, what have I do...” Blackness. | ||||||||||
