Minsk
- the capital of Belarus - is one of the oldest cities on
the territories of what used to be USSR. In 1997 Minsk celebrated
its 930th birthday! Through the ages it developed into a beautiful
urban center. Even though the modern architecture had its
effect on the appearence of the city, Minsk still retains
many 'classic' areas that retain the look of the 'start-of-the-century'
architechture.
Victory
Square is a heart of the central part of Minsk. The huge monument
that extends high into the sky was erected in memory of all
those who fought for the liberation of Belarus during the
World War II from 1941 to 1945. It is one of the major tourist
attractions of the city! During the wedding ceremonies, couples
come to the monument to take the pictures of their memorable
occaison.
Many
cities of the former USSR are known for their beautifully
decorated subway stations. Metro lines became more then just
means of transportation. Carefully designed and built, each
station is a work of art! The 'Yakub Kolas Station', shown
here, is a tribute to one of the most well-known Belorussian
poets. The walls of the columns are decorated with basreliefs
of young people, dressed in traditional Belorussian costumes,
and themes of traditional folk life of Belarus.
Minsk
is the cultural center of Belarus! It has a number of large
universities and colleges, including many research facilities,
vocational and design schools. It has six professional theatres
such as Theatre of Musical Comedy, Minsk Opera House, Theatre
of a Young Viewer and more!
There
is a great number of museums and exebitions as well. Movie
theatres are scattered throught out the city. Every major
city district usually has two or more cinemas. 'Moscow' movie
theatre is a more modern construction that was erected as
a part of the new city district that comparing to others is
relatively young - only fifteen years old.
