I highly recommend a Hewlett-Packard DeskJet with PhotoRet for home use.  Personally I wouldn't consider any other brand for color inkjet or laser, although both Canon and Epson are popular printers.

The Hewlett-Packard OfficeJet is a good choice if you need printing, scanning, copying, and faxing all in one.

Scanner

Scanners have recently dropped in price. There are some really cheap scanners out there, which are probably good buys if you want a really cheap scanner.  I have a Hewlett-Packard USB scanner, which I highly recommend.  It's fast and very easy to set up.  You also don't have any conflicting printer problems, which you typically have with a parallel port scanner.
