G-CHIP

(Graphical, Command-Line, Hyperlinked Interface Program)

An initiative for a new Unix GUI

G-CHIP, jee-chip, n. a GUI for the Unix Operating System that incorporates Graphical, Command-line and Hyperlink elements to provide unprecedented power and ease of use.

Check out a new user interface for Unix!

In these pages, you will find pictures (with explanations) of a hybrid user interface for Unix incorporating the traditional command-line, Windows-style graphical components and web-style hyperlinks, which will make it as easy to use as Windows 95, yet will not sacrifice any of the famed Unix power.

Quote:

"When I worked on other operating systems, I was limited by the power of the system. When I work on Unix, I am limited only by my mind."

A cold splash of realism

The interface described and illustrated here doesn't exist as yet. All "screenshots" have been painstakingly drawn using MS-Paint. I simply don't have the technical skill to implement it.

If you like this proposed interface and would like to see Unix wearing it, please write the software and release it under the GNU General Public License so that everyone can benefit from it.
