 TALES FROM THE DUCK SIDE!?

Long, long ago, in a galaxy far, far away...
      Ngek!!! Wrong entrance!!!!
In the beginning there was silence and darkness all across the.......wrong again!!!
On the first day, God created.......wrong again again!!!
Okay, it was 1993 (or was it '92???) when these 87 cool lads and hot gals took the entrance exam for the "prestigious institution" from across the LAND OF PROMISE (Mindanao to the uninitiated!). Some did excellent,  some passed with flying colors, some got so-so scores, and some were "pasang-awa" !!! Score-wise aside, all of them would eventually meet inside the four corners of Mindanao State University - Gen. Santos City Campus, and for the next four years share the joys, triumphs, tears, and sadness (do i hear someone say test answers???) of high school...

The first year was spent familiarizing with each other. Some already knew each other, as they were either elementary buddies or schoolmates. Like every other freshman, we were still on our "baby steps" in high school, and being a freshman means respecting those older than you!!! So, there we were, calling other studes "Ate this..." or "Kuya that...". School activities helped in the bonding our batch, as we helped one another in trying to beat the other batches. The outcome??? What do you expect??? We were merely freshmen - 95% of the time we got clobbered!!! But the other 5%, we were actually first placers. Our first batch bonding came during the preparations for the Intramurals. And, as usual we ended up as last-placers. Each section also had its own moniker based on the personalities of its constituents.  In retrospect, i think Pascal  was the best section ever for that batch!

Our second year had its share of ups and downs. First, the ups. Hmmm... ano nga ba??? Ah, we moved one step forward - there was now a batch younger than us (to pick on or to care for, that i do not know!). We were more cohesive now, as there is now a year of experience with each other. There were new additions to our batch, lecoy is one them, as lateral entrants came along for the ride. First far out field trip to Davao also took place in scicur curriculum, which was of course fun and at the same time tiring. Dandee's memory of that gig was the outing during the night. Now the downs. A certain Mr......!  became scicur's worst  teacher coz he smells like a skunk!!! While in SEDP our biology teacher required each of us to disect a frog as a  project. The students work hard for that project  while Raymond and his company work hard to steal the project of scicurs(buang na Raymond!!!). Tinutobuan na ng mga sungay ang mga estudyante!!! The students already know some of  buttkicking stuff like "the OBER DA BAKOD" thing. Cases of cheating were also cited, although dealt with at the classroom level only. Finally, the worst was the "curriculum factions" and the brandings that came along with it. "Justice for Jason!!!" the student shouted during the burial of our schoolmate Jason. He died in a tragic shooting accident (napagkamalan daw syang magnanakaw!!!). We also rode the band boom wave, and acoustic guitars were a commonplace then.

During our third year, the strong bond holding our batch together  was already beginning to surface. I think the batch felt closer than ever before - the factions were gone (daw) according to an article "THE BERLIN WALL...."  but we all know that it can never happened as long as there is SCICUR and there is SEDP. And from the ashes of  those new groupies were formed: 1.) Parokya ni Tsu-Tsu (Abdul and Co.), 2.) The Bongut Society (Lyle and Co.), 3.) Edyouths (Gerald and Co.),  4.) Pards (Raymond and Co.), 5.) Cross Swords Brotherhood (Jigger and Co.), 6.) The Exotic Dancres (Cherry Odi and Co.), 7.) Bodiongs (Alan and Co.). But, there were also departures from the batch Mark Lope "the arrogant one". Research (for scicurs) and CAT (for the third year aspirants) were also awaiting nightmares realized. Research and those out-of-school-data-gathering-then-going-to- malls  routine and then cramming at the 11th hour.  Then there was the Intramurals, a closely-contested event for us and the 4th years. Very close, to the point when COCC was used as "punishment" for our excellence (we nearly, nearly outclassed them!!!). Remember the COCC's initiation??? That was a tough one!!! That initiation took place the day (I think) before our christmas party. Also, this was the year when a mysterious student from SEDP steal math test paper from the faculty room to help other student to passed the exam (who could that be???). While in fashion, the CHUCK TAYLOR shoes and BELL BOTTOM pants became popular in our school. And who would forget our first ever Promenade??? I sure had a lot of fun then, kahit na mukhang mga "killer dressed up" ang mga boys because of our hair...

Fourth year!!! Our most controversial year!!! "One year na lang!!!" Now this statement may sound nostalgic, but underneath it also means joy. We thought of it as "One year na lang ...and we're outta here!!!" Anxiety really filled the air, but we still have to wait for 10 months. 10 memorable final months together. Now it was our turn to be at the helm of the CAT program. We now give orders to the aspiring cadets. It was payback time!!! when boys say goodbye to normal hair and hello generic haircuts, do push-ups or squat trust, 10 laps of duck walk,... the list goes on! Afternoons were never the same again anyway, we still had lots of fun...., yeah, right!!! The Intramurals came and finally we were crowned kings, with a commanding lead of course! The Prom!!! We looked formal now (the flat top hair). Again the mysterious student steal Physics test papers from the merciful Editha Blancaflor (Matsutsum) before the final exam!!! And then the  Research!!!(for scicurs)  No Research papers meant no final exam, so there they were (well, some), cramming and scurrying about.

And finally, Graduation!!! After the exams we began practicing the drills and the songs. I think the song "Place in this world" really stuck into our minds beacause of its really, really sucks, awkward tunes. Come graduation day, we played the songs very bad but still went on anyway. A lot cried during that day, but me??? I was laughing at those who were crying, lambasting their cheesiness and all. It never really bothered me cos i knew we would still see each other cos we were really close. My only hope is that we'd still be that close should we have a reunion...

The end is the beginning is the end???
