Stencil GrafittiThere is a strong culture of stencil grafitti in Brighton, although property owners and the Council are not quite as keen. I enjoy their humour..... This dead dog crimescene was where the Nia Cafe is now sited. .....and the speed at which they appear. Only days after the Council handed parking control over to NCP a stencil appeared with an NCP traffic warden wielding a police truncheon. Their temporary nature appeals to me. Some live for days, others for years. I take pictures of the images and publish them here so that they can live on. The Triffid lived in the car park by the Prince Regent swimming pool and lasted for a number of years. It is now lost to the great glass elevator (the new library complex). The library site is a site of grafitti controversy due to the prompt removal of hiakus that appear on the hoardings to the site. Surely, this is a non-damaging site for people to express creativity....ironic that a library should be against expression! Art, humour and self expression are things that are core to what I call Brighton. Stamping out all grafitti is another symptom of the yuppification of the City. I can see that it is a step towards cleaning up the City, but also it is also a step towards a coffee shop on every corner, all the pubs being converted into lifeless stripped pine, and the life of our City being changed. This multiface by Nylon (I think) was on the side of a building which is now Landsdowne Developments. There is a thin line between art and vandalism. I suppose i'm a little hippocritical because if someone sprayed something on the side of my house i'd be furious. It is hard to know how to distinguish between the two. 03/12/03: I am to appear on BBC Southern Counties Radio Drivetime at 5.45 to discuss these issues along with David Lepper, Labour and Co-operative Member of Parliament for Brighton Pavilion This appeared on building cite hoardings. It was painted over with dark green. A big hello to Natasha from Redesignz.com! There is a big collection of Brighton graf at Tatty Seaside Town Now that I have found the site I have been able to attribute some of the designs that I have taken pictures of. My apologies/thanks to Nylon for the fantastic faces that I have stolen for my main login screen. I hope that he isn't offended by my adaptation. Paris GrafittiThis large giraffe stencil must have taken a lot of work . I read in a French magazine that there is an artist who creates space invaders out of those small mosaic tiles. He sticks them in hard to find places all over the city, including one in the Louvre! I found this one over the river from the Eiffel Tower. TaggingI am anti-tagging. Learn how to paint properly and stop defacing property. 3D SignsNot grafitti, but in the spirit of graphic design set in public. Please note: I am not personally a grafitti artist, nor can I tell you where to find one. |
