Chapter 5: Conclusion

Most of the matters discussed in this paper detail the theoretical concept of the applications available widely. To put it flatly, we assume that the applications work exactly the same way specified by their writers. While it is expected to investigate in depth about different applications, we mean to their source code, time limits us to do so. It is easier to write the benefits of OSS (Open Source System) comparing to taking the real benefits of it. It takes a little time, patience and most of all an overall understanding of the platform on which they are being run to investigate the inner workings of any kind of application. We would have liked to pursue our goal by giving a thorough review of the source codes, but unfortunately it is not done in that way. However, it is illogical to give much importance to the upper-level application that always change. It is much more logical to give a thorough study to the system level components like UFS (Unix File System), NFS (Network File System), VM (Virtual Memory). We hope that someday, someone will give a thorough review to the source codes of such kind of basic system components and present a paper not only with theoretical concept but also in depth review of the source codes. This might pave the way of using it not only in his/their paper but also to the classes that tend to discuss the theoretical concepts of Operating Systems.

Another achievement can be achieved creating such a small model network perfect for research purpose. Students can test their different tools developed for networking purpose. Though, UNIX tends to treat inter-process communication as any other networking protocols it is necessary to have multiple physical hosts to test them. Moreover, the Free-UNIX world broadens the possibility of creating such kind of networks in an inexpensive way.
