Guido's Web - Military - Navy SEALs Info & History

The SEALs are one of the best known elite forces today. They are well respected by other elite forces, and are said to have the toughest training of all. SEAL originates back to the WWII, where the Navy Combat Demolition Unit (NCDU) was created in 1943. Their primary mission then was to clear safe lanes for landing crafts. In 1947 created the US Navy it's first offensive unit Underwater Demolition Team (UDT). The UDT personnel was volunteers from the Navy and the Marine Corps. UDT wasn't just meant to clear beach heads, but also to conduct mission such as blowing up bridges and ships. It was UDT teams who lead the landing at Inchon in the Korean War.

In 1960 suggested the US Navy a need for a specialized unit to conduct deep penetrations reconnaissance, sabotage and Counter-Terrorist missions (CT). And in 1962 was the first two SEAL teams created. SEAL ONE was to operate in the Pacific theater and SEAL TWO was to operate in the Atlantic theater. The SEAL teams were people recruited primarily from the UDT. The first SEALs were deployed in Vietnam in 1966. They operated in the Mekong Delta, conducting reconnaissance, search and destroy and rescuing missions.

In 1983 was existing UDT teams redesignated as SEAL teams, so today are there six SEAL Teams operating plus DEVGRU (Naval Special Warfare Development group). DEVGRU is the SEALs' counter-terrorist unit, after SEAL TEAM 6 was disbanded.

SEAL Team 8 is the newest team on the block on the East Coast. They're doing some new and improved stuff in deploying as a strike force from carriers.

Stationed: HQ and Western teams: Coronado Naval Base, San Diego, California. Eastern teams: Little Creek, Virginia. DEVGRU: Dam Neck, Virginia.
Weapons: Basically, if you can carry it and have a need, it is available.
