Advantages of Linux

Full multitasking

Multiple task and multiple devices can be accessed at same time.

Virtual Memory

Linux uses portion of the hard drive as virtual memory.

The X Window System

It is a graphics systems for UNIX machines and is also known as X11.

Built-in networking support

Linux uses standard TCP/IP protocols, including Network File System (NFS) and Network Information Service (NIS).

Shared Libraries

Each application shares a common library of subroutines that it can call at runtime. This saves up hard disk space.

GNU software support

Linux can run a wide collection of free software available through the GNU project. Software includes application developments ( GNU C and GNU C++ ) , system administration (gawk, groff and etc ) and games (GNU Chess , etc).

Compatility with the IEEE POSIX.1 standard

Linux supports many of the standards set forth for all UNIX systems.

Linux
For the past few months, I have been playing with this operating system. What can I say about it ? Linux is POWER. That's how I would describe it. It could do many things which Windows 95 can do. One weakness of it is that, it is not easy to learn and things are much complicated. This operating system is categorize as Character User Interface. It has it's own Windows though called Xwindows or X11. Here, read about it more.
