Hello fellow babblers,

Are there any books a web designer should read? Siegel mentioned some
books in CKWS, has anyone read them?
I just ordered "The Form of the Book", what else should I get?

happy new year,
Juha Rudanko

Does anyone have an example of either a "graphical" or "textual"
depiction of the hours of operation for a business? I'm trying to
develop a model to be used at a multi-business site and space is a
concern but so is the efficiency of communicating "at-a-glance". I've
tried grids & colored horizontal bars, I've also tried text only -- but
I'm not sure how effective they would be. Any suggestions or opinions
would be welcome...

Subject: Dreamweaver and rollovers

Hi Babblers!

I've decided to give Dreamweaver a test drive and at least in the
beginning I was impressed by it (better than Front Page, at least
for small or medium sized projects, IMHO).

I wanted to see how it handles events and I've tried to make some
(in)famous rollovers. It worked pretty easy using Behaviours, with
OnMouseOver SwapImage and OnMouseOut SwapImageRestore...

Then I had an unpleasant surprise: the code it generates is not too
good. I mean, it doesn't preload the necessary pics. I was rather
disappointed by this...

My question is: Am I missing something? (could be, since I don't use
to read the manuals) Or, is there a workaround? Or do I still have
to code everything in everyone favourite's editor, Notepad? :-)

TIA,

Armand N.

Well, I recommend you try macromedia dreamweaver. it is pricey, but it
beats the hell out of FrontPage:especially with the code it generates.
then again, this is an opinion, but i have used both products. :o)

No, I cannot see any way to get dreamweaver to preload images.

I was experimenting with setting an onLoad image swap - but this seemed
to crash explorer and is not really an efficient means of performing the
task. The great thing about dreaweaver, anyway, is that you can switch
into the text editor of your choice and back again without much trouble
- - the program won't mangle any of your code.

Perhaps you can try using a library file to plug a standard preload
source file into your code. Then use a text editor to leap in and touch
it all up.

On another note, the dreamweaver jscript code is of some disappointment
to me. The functions are completely overblown and immense - the hacked
mouseOver that I created was about 30 lines long - my stock mouseOver
requires just 5 lines (generously spaced). I feel that for many
functions, it is better to generate your own code and techniques - it
will prove faster and more efficient.

I need to know how to do mouseovers, can anyone give me the code? Does
it require two images? Help.

Check out Nick Heinle's "Definitive Rollover Script", at:

Good explanations and code.

Hope that helps.

Subject: Re: Why a domain ?

In addition to the arguments you have put forth so far, The obvious
convincer is simply this: Having you own domain name saves you time and
money. An example will suffice. Suppose you have your own domain,
www.bigcorp.com with internet provider A. You can have an e-mail
address, sales@bigcorp.com, point to your e-mail account on ISP A.
If you need or want to change ISPs at any time for any reason to ISP
B, all you need to change is to tranfer the domain to ISP B and repoint
your sales@bigcorp.com address to your e-mail on ISP B. Your customers
are not even aware of what happened and you have zero downtime. In
addition, a savvy company will advertise its web site in all its other
printed ads, tv or radio spots, letterhead, etc. None of these will need
to be changed in the above scenario.
Let us suppose, however that your client chooses to not register a
domain name and that their site resides at www.ispa.com/bigcorp, with
e-mail address sales@ispa.com. If they change now, their site address
will change to www.ispb.net/bigcorp, e-mail adress will become
sales@ispb.net.
First, all customers will have to be notified of the change in
e-mail/web addresses (a expensive hassle), they will have to pay double
fees if they want to keep www.ispa.com/bigcorp running until
www.ispb.net/bigcorp is operational to avoid service disruption to their
customers (another expensive hassle) and all promotional materials that
mention the web site or e-mail address will have to be redone (another
expensive hassle).
Go over the figures with your client. Weigh $100 US for 2 years
and $50 US every year after VS the cost of the changes above and I think
you'll have made your case.

Please take a look at the following address:

http://developer.netscape.com/library/index.html

On that page you should follow hyperlink leading to JavaScript
examples. You should find there everything you need and much
more. I don't know if Netscape's code cares about browser
versions, so keep in mind that you can do image flipping only in
Netscape >3 and IE >4.

Hope it helps,

Subject: "Panoramic Shooting" digicam feature

Dear Babblers,

continuing somewhat the "horizontal scroll" topic of some days ago --

I've a question abt. "panoramic shooting" -- first some background:

1. as a painter, I'm looking toward experimenting w/ long horizontal
paintings designed for website presentation as a scrollable
horizontal work, prob. generally a single vertical screenfull, but
the equivalent of several (or many) horizontal screens-full.

2. don't yet have a digital camera, and have been spending hours &
hours online, checking out models, featuers, prices, auctions, etc.

In my price range (prob. not beyond say $600-$700) am leaning toward
the Olympus D320L camera (best price circa $590), which looks to be a
fine quality camera w/ many good features.

However, considering the particular application noted in item #1
above, I'm esp. interested by the following description of a feature
of the new (since autumn '97) [& somewhat less expensive] Casio QV700
digital camera (this from their website
http://www.casio.com/html/whatsnew/cwhatsnew37.html ):

Panoramic Shooting.
This feature works in conjunction with the included
Spin[tm] Panorama. After you capture an image a part of it
remains on the screen so you can align the next image. This
continues until your panoramic scene is captured. Then on
your PC you can use the Spin[tm] software to stitch the
images together to create a panoramic image or a QuickTime VR
movie. This is ideal for website developers, e-mail and
business presentations.

3. I don't yet have Adobe Photoshop, but look toward getting a copy
(4.0 version) soon.

Okay, question is: Can one successfully compose such seamless
panoramic pictures using *any* good digital camera (such as the
Olympus D320L) along w/ whatever graphics software? The way in
which -- according to the above -- the QV700's LCD screen can (when
in panoramic mode) retain the edge (right edge? left edge? one chooses?)
of the just-shot image, so as to visually align the next shot, seems
like it might help considerably with the process. But I wonder if
that's really necessary per se (& hence, if I should consider getting
what might in some respects be an inferior (though still good)
camera, for sake of this feature crucial for one of the uses I plan
to put the camera to . . . )

If anyone has views / thoughts abt. this, I'd be grateful to hear them.

w/ thanks,
d.i.
