I'm not a fan of Americana, but if the treatment works, I'd use it.

Subject: Your opinions

Hope everyone had a happy holiday season and gave your minds a well
deserved rest.

As you come back up to speed I was wondering if I could get your
opinions on a site that is in the 80% completion (everything works just
needs some cleanup here and there) stage and see how you think the site
navigates, and any other thoughts you have.

The site http://www.JeepWarehouse.com

After you look through the site if you could tell me if you would ever
consider purchasing a vehicle this way and what do you think will be the
stumbling blocks for the average internet user.

Thanks,

Ken Zvokel

I know this may be for the intermediate but I thought it would be a great
site for everyone.

They'll do a five point check on your website for free and they offer a
graphics reducer which will put your graphics under 15k and they'll give you
a choice of 5 or more graphics that you can use.

Ken you asked for opinions about the site you designed:
http://www.jeepwarehouse.com

I would suggest starting with a thorough reading of David Siegel's book
Creating_Killer_Web_Sites. You've made just about every mistake there is
to be made in site design (according to the CKWS book).

If you (and your client) want people to buy $15-30K vehicles from an
on-line forum you must make it compelling - at a minimum, fresh content
is something I would consider essential -- that is if I were looking for
information to make a buying decision, second would be price which seems
pretty competitive at the site.

Have a look at http://best4x4.landrover.com/ - LandRover's US site --
this web site is written up in David Siegel's recent book
Secrets_of_Successful_Web_Sites and is an excellent example of what can
be done in this medium both from a design & engineering perspective.

Well Ken, you asked for opinions and I'm sure there are more on the way
from other list members. Don't take them personally -- remember:

My comments, with car-geek hat on, not Net maven hat. I wouldn't buy recent
year model car over the Net. I buy many things over the Net, but when it
comes to cars, I like to drive it, kick the tires, look under the hood,
listen for valve rattles and feel for wheel shimmy. When spending serious
$$$, I personally need to see the vehicle and test it before buying. I do
find it useful when local dealers have web pages, so I can surf up-to-date
inventory and prices, without suffering a car salesperson's fast pitch. In
fact, I bought my last truck this way: saw it on the web site, called,
then drove down to see it and buy it a few hours later.

I've read Siegel's books, and yes they are impressive, and yes they
provide nice guidelines -- maybe even something to strive for(?). But, I
think you go a little far suggesting that every site needs to be a
"Siegel". I'm sure David would love to think that everyone should be
following his footsteps. And you sir, should spend a little more time
down in the trenches. For one thing, there is nothing wrong with getting
a design up and running, meeting marketing goals, and then improving on
the presentation as time permits. Have you worked in a "results
oriented" enviroment at all? Or do you possibly have all the time you
need to become well versed in the art of site design before you produce
anything?

As for site, http://www.jeepwarehouse.com, there a few comments I would
like to make. First, the site presentation, I think, would be more
attractive using a coordinated color scheme. Also, the technical data
provided in the tables could be made more attractive.

Would I buy a jeep from your site? I've never bought an automobile from
a web site before. I agree with Dana in that I like to take it for a
test spin, kick the tires and fondle it a little before I part with the
big bucks.

If your site were a "Siegel" site, would I be more inclined to buy? I
don't think so. You would have to convince me through presentation that
I don't have to kick the tires and take it for a test spin.

Does Siegel's LandRover site convince me of this. No it doesn't.

And remember, Dana, don't take my comments personally...
Phil
