Sorry about this, but two more things just came to my mind. When I index
to the web palette, i am unable to use the hvs export. Indexing then using
gif89a gives me a 1.38kb file size, while using hvs gives me a 700byte
size. What are the best ways you've found to get quality, web safe, small
gifs in a relatively speedy manner (without using DeBabelizer)? Thanx so
much.

Hi, there's a program called screenruler for windows and mac at
http://www.kagi.com/microfox/
that works as a... ruler! :o)
Great when measuring those tinzywinzy pixels...

The technique I use (not earth shattering, but effective) is to
duplicate the master, rename at the given opportunity and check "merged
layers". This leaves the master alone and creates the desired true-color
image that needs indexing -- anyhow, I next index down to as small an
adaptive&diffuse palette as I can while still maintaining image qaulity.
Next I color correct any of the major original color safe areas by
directly manuipulating the palette. This gives an image that on an
8-bit-color client will dither somewhat, but will look absolutely
fabulous on 16bit color depths & higher -- phew!
Admittedly, this is a lot of work. But I don't have the bread for
something like Debabelizer -- so I use "hand" instead of "power"
tools
to get the job done -- quality is the goal...
Any other techniques out there?

I was on C|NET reading a review about Flash
http://www.cnet.com/Content/Builder/Graphics/Media/ss03.html
When I came across something interesting which may make Flash more
attractive to those concerned about the fact that it needs a plug-in,
albeit a small one:
"Macromedia's new Aftershock utility, which is available as a
free download ...automatically creates the HTML needed to host
a Flash file. Also, Aftershock includes a new Java version of the
Shockwave Flash player, so users can say good-bye to plug-in hassles."
I'd love to hear what people think about this, and if it is as it seems.
AfterShock is free and works with PCs and Macs:

Subject: Putting a signature on a site
Dear List,
I am designing a site for an insurance company and the president (aka
my
mom) of the company would like to have a brief note on the core page and
have
her signature on it. Is there a danger to putting someones signature on
a
website? Also, could anyone send me some links of sites that do have
signatures of CEO's on the web so I can format the letter to that.
Thanks in advance,
Gil Kruger

Could someone please let me know the easiest way to make part
of a site password-protected?
Also, please send your favorite WEB fonts to jfisher@ravenet.com..
I am putting a list together of the best fonts for the web. I am
looking for fonts that display well at small sizes. I am looking
for fonts that can be used as .GIFS and not those best used for HTML
text (font face..etc) Any questions...e-mail me.

Say the following while patting your head and rubbing your tummy...
"The web is not PRINT, the WEB is not print, the web is NOT print."
Security concerns aside - I imagine her signature is on a number of
public & private documents readily accessible to both insiders and
outsiders alike. If someone was going to forge a signature they'd sure
need a better sample than that given at 72/96 dpi.
Why bother? Why must you have a signature? And to show "what???"
-
sincerity? that should be communicated in the statement - I mean it's
not like she's Phyllis Diller, or Hillary Clinton...
Get ready for a rant...
A signature is in reality an anachronism. We as a society still need
to
sign checks, receipts, and executive orders but the signature really
doesn't do anything - it's there for what *might* happen later, e.g. "I
didn't really sign that, it's a forgery! See the signature doesn't
match" or conversely "I really do get to close that account, see
my
signature matches". American express certainly does not examine all
those signatures, they only will after you say "Hey that's not mine!"
--
check the back of most peoples bank cards, I'll bet at least one in your
wallet isn't signed. Most of the time we do what we do, and get what we
get by being there -- or in the absence of physically being there, our
information is there.
Think about this for a moment. (tongue firmly planted in cheek) A
letter, signed and presented on the web as a digital version of a
printed letter really says - Hey there! I don't have a clue about this
medium but I'm the one paying the bills so I think we should have this
page with my picture, some words someone else wrote (re: communications
department) and my signature on it so people will know I'm really
sincere...
Don't worry about the signature, worry about the message. If it's her
company's web site it's safe to assume she means what she says and it
really is her message.

Teresa Martin and Glenn Davis of Project Cool fame have their new
developer's search engine online. And what an engine it is... According
to the WebMonkey article:
"Using devSearch, a user can now search 21 sites
on specific HTML, scripting, design, and other
developer-related questions - including Wired
Digital's Webmonkey, CNET's builder.com, Netscape's
DevEdge, and developer.com. Using either site-targeted

information on how to build a Java mouseover button,
for example, or where to find a poll script."

Subject: color mapping in IE
Hi guys...
I have a problem trying to match a photograph (jpg) to the background
color (#FFCC33).
The page looks perfect in 24 bit and 8 bit both in IE and NS, but at 16
bit,
it looks terrible in IE but normal in NS. I thought both NS and IE use the
same browser safe color (the color-cube), but apparently @ 16 bit they are
mapped slightly off.
Any idea?
second problem... printing problem... how wide your page could be so
it will
print properly?
690px seems too large, 640 will print right. Is there any way around so
we
can force to print, let's say, 800px?
TIA
- -jo
[I use NS 3.0 - 4.0 and IE 3.0 - 4.0]
