I would not recommend any of the submission services over manual
submissions. Reason being, no two search engines like their submissions the
same way. With a submission service, you're sending the same info to every
engine. With manual submissions, though, you can tailor your submission to
take advantage of all the engine's inherent peccadillos (word of the day).

Search engine submission shouldn't be taken lightly. If you want to get to
the top of the lists, you need to do serious ongoing homework, and do it
yourself. At the very least, manually submit to Yahoo, Infoseek,
Alta-Vista, Excite, Northern Lights, Webcrawler, Lycos, & Hotbot. The
others can be done through a submission service or submittal software (even
better).

A common Web design question is:

"How can I manipulate the palette of an image
to change every instance of one color to another?"

Well the PixelSmith section of WebDesign & Review has an article on this
very topic at:

As an early and frequent user of the 'single pixel gif trick' made
famous by David Seigel, I found a white pager on the PixelSmith section
of WebDesign & Review to be very informative as to why I should consider
another way to create white space from now on:

Bad idea if you want it done right. I've done close to 100 promotional
registration campaigns for clients and my own sites, and if you want
it done right - by hand is the only way to go.

To illustrate why, in part:

>Alta Vista is notoriously slow, Infoseek will list your site within a
>few days

Infoseek registers sites *instantly* if done by hand, while Alta Vista
indexes sites within 48 hours.

In addition, if you look at the fine print on the search engines, you
will see that most "reserve the right to reject or delay automated
submissions."

When it comes down to it, the automated services are fine for most
non-business sites, but doing it by hand is the only method for
optimal results. There is a major difference.

And while I'm at it...all those pretty framed sites are stumbling blocks
for several of the search engines unless you design specifically for them
to index it.

Wow and ugh all at once. Won't Macs and PC's differation of text size
affect using non-breaking spaces though? As well as bg colored
underscores and the like?

Does anyone know of any well-designed horizontally scrolling sites? I've
been toying with the idea. Have any of you ever stepped out your comfort
zone and tangoed horizontally? Any ideas or suggestions?

Especially his gallery, which is one of the few uses of horizontal scrolling
I've encountered that made sense.

Check out this page. It makes good use of the horizontal to present a story
which would be to long to present vertically. It's only one section, but it
works well.
