Current Calendar system

The current system internationally followed for all trade, commerce & international dealings is the Julian Calendar with Gregorian Correction or simply called the Gregorian Calendar.

Origin of Calendars

Use of various calendars has been for known for long a time. One of the oldest & classic calendar system is the Hindu Calendar system estimated to 1000 B.C. Its based on the lunar revolutions and has adjustments(intercalation/extracalatio) to solar reckoning.

Use

There are quite a few view points on the origin and use of calendars. Calendars in many civilizations were used mainly for harvesting in agriculture, to keep track of seasons. It got extended to civic-life, adminstration purposes and religious observances. In ancient advanced civilizations, like Egyptian, Greek & Indian - they were used for astronomy, chronology of history, astrology & associated sciences. In modern day, it has become part and parcel of all activities. Its extensively used in trade & commerce.

Types of Calendars.

The basis of the system leads to two major types :

Solar Calendar - A system in which an unit(year) is based on the time taken for revolution of the earth around the sun
Lunar Calendar - A system in which an unit(month) is based on the time taken for moon to revolve round the earth,

The currently followed international calendar is a Solar Calendar.

About Solar Calendar.

The year is based on the time taken for one revolution of the Earth (around the Sun.) The tropical year (the interval between successive passages of the Sun through the vernal equinox.) consists of 365.242199 mean solar days, i.e., 365 days 5 hours 48 minutes 46 seconds. (The mean solar day is the average interval between two passages of the Sun across the meridian.)
