SAGAR (means ocean in Sanskrit) is Taluk (town) in Karnataka state of INDIA. Its located in the shimoga district. Its around 360 kms away from Bangalore, the Silicon Valley of the East.

The region of Sagar is known as Malnad (Rainy region) because of the heavy monsoons it receives. Its got thick forests, hilly regions and wildlife. Its got good scenic beauty and is paradise for nature-lovers.

Sagar is also known as Srigandhada Gudi (Home of Sandalwood) since this place is rich in Sandalwood. Its also known for Sandal wood carvings.

Ikkeri Kingdom, stone temples, etc. It is around 4 Km from the centre of the town. One can take bus service, or a taxi. People who love to walk can enjoy moving around in the shade of the trees.

Keladi was centre of a tiny kingdom. Its known for stone temples. The stone temples are know for its architecture. Mr. Gunda Jois, an eminent historian of that place

Jog Falls, the longest natural waterfalls in India and 27th in the world. Its around 26Kms from the heart of Sagar town. It has four steams of falls namely, Raja, Rani, Roarer, Rocket.

Vardamoola, the place where the river Varada originates. River basin has lot of importance in the history and civilization. Its along the river basins, where most of the civilizations rose and grew. River has divinity associated with it for all Indians.

VardaHalli has the Ashram of Sri Sridhar Swamy. Its atop the hill and has a calm, cool and serene atomosphere. There are lot of disciples and devotes (mainly from the neighbouring Maharastra state) visiting this place. This was the place where the sage Sri Sridhar Swamy meditated. His samadhi is also located at this place. A vedic school is also located at this place.

Kalasi stone temple. It contains pillars with exquisite designs. In some of the pillars you see images inverted, flattened, elongated and so on.

Marikamba temples and Marikamba Fair. The temple located in the centre of the town is in the shape of a chariot. A fair is held once in every three years.

Ninasam (Nilakanteshwara Natya Sangha), the pioneers of experimental theatre in India, especially Karnataka. are located at a village called Heggodu in Sagar. Its managed by KV Subbanna, the magassasay award winner for arts.

The whole area is known from Sceanic beauty. There are planty of nearby site-seeing places.

Yakshagana is a traditional form of dance-drama which is held throughout the night. This form of art is practiced mainly in Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada & Shimoga districts. Its known as the cultural heritage of Karnataka. The Yakshagana troupe tour around various places specially in the summer season. The performance is carried out in the night and goes on till next day morning. Its characteristics include a main controller called Bhagavatar who controls the performance. He sings songs and carries on the performance. He is accompanied by lot of instrumentalists. The actual dance and conversation is carried out by artistes. The main themes are picked from

ART - Yakshagana, Ninasam, Bharatanatyam, etc

ARCHITECTURE - Keladi, Ikkeri, Kalasi

VISITING/HOW TO REACH

From Bangalore, SAGAR is connected by Road & Rail. The Railway service is temporarily stopped pending upgradation. Many government and private luxury coaches ply between Bangalore and Sagar. You can even hire private taxis. The distance is around 373 Km and takes around 8hrs by bus. The luxury Bus journey costs approximately Rs 200 (USD 6). Note : These buses, in general, are not air-conditioned (its generally cooler in the nights)

PEOPLE & CULTURE People are generally peace-loving and helpful in nature. They are also known for interest in arts and architecture.

LANGUAGE, USE OF ENGLISH AND MANAGING THE WAY AROUND

In most locations, one can easily manage in English. Many of the sign-baords and shop names are in English as well. But the people of this speak mainly Kannada the language of the Karnataka state. However, many of them are English educated and can converse in English. In general, people are helpful.

FOOD

Vegetarian food is available in abundance and variety. Altho, there are a few restaurants offering non-vegetarian dishes, its advised for the visitor's to eat the variety of vegetarian dishes and enjoy the food. Mysore-masala Dosa, Idli, Vada, Rice, Sambhar, and variety of sweet dishes are available. Most of the people eat food with hands. People eat lot of vegetables.
