The Rotary Club of Nelson.
Marine Show 2000
welcome to the Nelson Rotary
Marine Show Website.
The Rotary Club of Nelson has had as it's major fundraiser held a biannual Marine Show
held at the Trafalgar Centre. The first show, named "Water '88" was held in 1988 and was
such a success that it has been held every second year since then, in October to coincide
with the start of the new summer water/boating season.
The chairman of the first show
in 1988 was Arthur Bradbury, our District
Governor 1999-2000.
Each show has benefited charities, mostly local charities, many associated with
youth and water-related activities.
Our Y2K show was on the 30th September/1st October 2000 at the Trafalgar Centre.
The theme was
Marine Safety.
The Shellfish Challenge, with teams from various fisheries
competing with each other to open scallops and oysters had to be cancelled because the
poor condition of the scallops forced the delay of the commercial scalloping season.
World Record broken at the Boat Show!
A team comprising 10 masters rowers from around New Zealand rowed 100 km
and broke the current Nelson held world record for the 50 to 55 age group
and set an inaugural NZ record for a 45 to 54 age group ( where no rower
can be younger than 45 ).
The new time of 5 hours, 24 minutes and 10.8 seconds beat the old time by
19 minutes and 26 seconds and came within 2 minutes 49 seconds of the
current 45 to 50 world record set at the Nelson A & P show in November
1999 by the Nelson team.
Rowing in one minute relays, each team member rowed for 32 minutes and
then 5 finished the event with 30 seconds each.
The team members were :
- Tom Just and Rod Trott (Wellington)
- Bryan Walford (Rotorua)
- Gordon Trevett, Bernie Carter, Richard Prince, Dave Jack and
Norman Sharpe (Auckland)
- Denis Moriarty and Alan Winwood (Nelson)
Plans are now being made to host the inaugural NZ Indoor Rowing Marathon
and Half Marathon championships in Nelson late in 2001.
