Personally
Ok what have I got to say?
Well let me quote a very wise old man. I yam what I yam ( Popeye the sailor )
Being Eurasian is a strange thing. I have been one for my whole life so when I am asked I
usually am lost for words. Like how would I know any different!?!! What I imagine people
want to know is how we handle the mixed cultures, being part Asian and part Western.
*grin* Well guess what....WE do NOT have to PUT ON accents when WE talk. Ya lor no
need to slang wan!
Funny thing, I was in England several years ago and they could NOT
guess where I was from by my accent. Then I told them singapore was my home, they went
"WOW! you speak english very well"
I was HIGHLY tempted to reply,
"Like DDuh you idiots once were the colonial masters in
Singapore...I kinda
THINK some english brushed off on the locals"
but due to my manners and the fact that I was a visitor in their country I just smiled paid for
my muffin and went on my way.
Really not much can be seen as difficult in living with mixed heritage, I mean like my "family" the
Reutens have been in Singapore for 200 years, and in Asia for longer.
I guess the ones who would have the most problems are the first generation Eurasians.
These are kids who have one parent direct from the West and one direct from the East.
These are the ones who have to get used to speaking 2 different languages, ( I know
Singapore has multi-languages but in such proliferation it is not really hard to find a common
tongue to converse in )meeting relatives who have no idea that Singapore is NOT part of China.
ok I'll stop here Fri 12 1999 more later. :0 cheers
