Artist in Residence
Frank Bevier: Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism
Wednesday, After Mass. 14" x 11". Acrylic on Cardboard. 1990.
This is one of several paintings of this scene, which I did after a visit to
Springfield, Massachussetts. I drove from Albany to Springfield on the back
roads through the Berkshire Mountains one day, and was struck by the "New
England" churches and houses which are typical to this region.
Hunstanton Lighthouse. 20" x 16". Oil on Canvas. 1991.
I completed this painting in Greenwich Village, after a trip
to England. I lived at 5 Astley Crescent in Hunstanton from 1956 to 1958.
The house I lived in was quite close to the lighthouse, just above the
cliffs. I was in the habit of walking down to Old Hunstanton with my dog,
especially on Saturday and Sunday mornings. We used to look for fossils,
shells, and anything interesting which might have been washed up on shore from
the North Sea. The lighthouse has not changed in 40 years.
Barrio, Tucson Arizona. 12" x 10". Tempera on Cardboard. 1991.
I visited the Barrio district of Tucson in 1991 and did a series of
paintings and drawings based on my experiences there. I liked the
architecture of the older homes and churches there. It reminded me a lot
of the old shanty towns in my native Georgia. The woman in this painting
is based on Elizabeth Barnes.
