This is a painting of a young woman named Irene who lived in Greenwich
Village. I used to see her frequently at meetings, and based this painting
on a sketch which I did of her when I saw her one day at the Village Temple,
East 11th Street, New York City. Irene was a student at New York University
and almost always wore dresses like this one. She used to ride her bicycle
to the meetings in the Village.

The sketch for this painting was originally done in pencil on paper on a
hot afternoon in the summer of 1991, based on an actress who used to go
to a meeting at the Village Temple every Saturday afternoon. This finished
painting was done in one evening in my little studio in Greenwich Village
on Horatio Street, using a palette knife with oil paint.
Beach Huts at Hunstanton, England. 6 1/2" x 8". Tempera on Cardboard. 1991.
This is one of a series of paintings and drawings of the huts at Old
Hunstanton. These are wooden huts which sit actually on the sand in front
of the sand dunes on the beach at Old Hunstanton. They are used as changing
rooms, for making tea, and for getting out of the cold winds which
frequently blow in from the North Sea. This painting is actually quite small
and done in muted colors, since the day I took the photographs for this series
it was one of those cold, grey, windy, overcast days in October 1990.
