Lady in Waiting

I wait as silent longing fills my soul
for you who will return to me in Spring
I make such show of playing out my role
to ease the ache that missing you can bring.

I wait through year-long days, or so they seem,
through nights when time just doesn't pass at all.
I try to sleep in hopes that I may dream
of scenes from our last meeting in the Fall.

I wait for touch to make the distance fade
for voices soft to murmur through the night
for pleasures shared once more in beds unmade
for waking to your face by morning's light.

Although no one might guess such is my fate,
till you bring back my life to me, I wait.

This is a sonnet. My favorite line: I wait...for pleasures shared once more in beds unmade.
