Welcome to Charcoal Light, a web site designed to explore our relationship to the world through vision. This site is divided into two major categories, image and text. At present, the content contained herein deals primarily with the radical changes that visual experience and vocabulary underwent as a result of the introduction of industrial technology during the 19th century. In particular, steam power and photography (and its many variants) exercised a dramatic influence on how and what we see. In the future other focal points will inevitably be added.

My goal in organizing this site is to provide a basis for considering and discussing this evolving relationship between vision and the world that exercises such a powerful influence on modern culture. I hope that you find Charcoal Light to be interesting and informative. Any suggestions that you might have as to how I might make this site more effective would be greatly appreciated.

Check back in the next few weeks as further additions to the site will be forthcoming.
