My mom and I were in the US for a week in September/October, 1998. We took the plane from Oslo to Amsterdam, were there for an hour or two, and then landed at O'Hare in Chicago, Illinois. about 8 hours later. We got our luggage and met my mom's cousin and her husband at the airport. Outside it was hot - 28'C (82'F), and that's a lot compared to what we usually have in Norway. We were really tired (jet lag) when we got to their house in Mundelein, about an hour's drive from Chicago, so we practically just ate dinner and went to bed.
The next day we went shopping at Vernon Hills. I bought a few books, the Dr. Dolittle soundtrack and the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (which rocks). The weather was still great, really warm. The two next days we went shopping at Gurnee Mills; this huge mall outside of Chicago - we needed two days just to see the whole thing. I went to Pacific Sunwear and bought this really cool O'neill T-shirt, and they had so many cool clothes there, but I didn't really need much, so I only bought that one. At Saks off 5th Avenue I bought loads of really cheap Clinique make-up - which is expensive in Norway.
After the wonderful stay at my mom's cousin's house we went to Chicago. On our first day in the Windy City we went shopping on Michigan Avenue, but there were mostly very expensive shops there, so we didn't buy much.
We stayed in Chicago for almost 4 days, and on our second day, the weather was great so we went to see the view of the city from the John Hancock building. It was great. Not a cloud on the sky (almost), and we could see four states from the 94th floor. After that we went to Shedd Aquarium - the largest in the world - which was really great. Loads of fish in all the colors of the rainbow. In the afternoon we went to see Ever After - a Cinderella Story at the Water Tower Place. I truly love that movie. After we'd been to the movies we went out to eat at this Thai cuisine which had very nice food.
On our third day in Chicago we went to the Lincoln Park Zoo and the Field Museum, which were both really nice, even though I'm not that keen on going to museums. In the evening we went to Benihana. I love that restaurant. It's Japanese, and they cook the food at your table, which is really cool, 'cause the chefs are absolutely excellent!
The last day of our stay in the US we went to Niketown and the Viacom store, etc. We have nothing like those shops in Norway, and they're both so huge. We bought lunch at the Cheesecake Factory, yum. I love Chicago - it's such a nice city. Almost cooler than London...
